Will Your Rayon Kurti Shrink? Cotton vs Rayon vs Viscose, and How to Wash Each One

Wash a rayon kurti by hand in cold water with a mild liquid detergent, never wring or twist it, and dry it flat in the shade — heat and agitation are what shrink viscose rayon, not water itself.

Rayon is only fragile for the few minutes it spends wet — which is where most rayon kurtis are lost.

1. Cold tap water only — never warm, never hot.

Why rayon shrinks when cotton mostly doesn't

Viscose rayon is regenerated cellulose — wood pulp dissolved and reformed into filament. That route gives it fluid drape and sharp print definition, and one weakness: the fibre swells as it takes up water and loses much of its strength while wet.

A soaked kurti is therefore a weak fabric carrying its own water's weight: hang it dripping and the shoulders and hem stretch, then heat dries the distorted fibre and it relaxes back short and stiff. Cotton is the same cellulose in its natural form, so it stays strong wet and shrinks mainly on the first hot wash, as the yarn releases weaving tension.

Rayon's problem is never the water — it is rough handling of a temporarily weak fibre: a technique problem, not a defect.

The bucket method, step by step

Most washing in India happens in a bucket or a semi-automatic, not the washer-dryer American laundry guides assume.

1. Half a bucket of cold tap water.
2. Dissolve a capful of mild liquid detergent before the garment goes in. Undissolved granules mark the fibre, worst on dark rayon.
3. Turn the kurti inside out and press it under gently.
4. Soak 5 to 10 minutes. No brush, no scrubbing, no bleach.
5. Rinse in two changes of plain cold water, swirling rather than squeezing.
6. Lift it supported from underneath, lay it on a dry towel, roll and press.
7. Dry flat or on a wide hanger, in shade.

Never hang a dripping rayon kurti to drain: the water's weight pulls the shoulders and hem out of shape when the fibre is weakest.

If you must use a washing machine

Mesh bag, delicate cycle, cold water, lowest spin, washed alone or with similar colours, out of the drum within minutes, never tumble dried. On a semi-automatic, skip the spin drum or give it under 15 seconds. Lower risk is not no risk: a garment whose page says Hand Wash should be hand washed.

Cotton vs viscose rayon: the comparison table

Rayon's wins are real: it drapes in a way cotton cannot without being cut much fuller, prints sharper, creases less, and costs less. Cotton's wins show up in the bucket — wet strength, breathability in long heat, forgiveness for a careless cycle. There is no overall winner; the question is how often the piece gets washed, and by whom.

Wash and dry settings by fabric

How to tell pure cotton from rayon at home

Blends muddy all four, so the product page's fabric line beats any home test. A burn test on one loose thread pulled from an inside seam allowance, over a sink, is the last resort — never on a visible part of a garment you intend to wear.

My rayon kurti already shrank — what now?

Soak it in cool water with a little hair conditioner, stretch the damp fabric gently back into shape by hand, and dry it flat. That eases relaxation shrinkage from over-drying and is partial at best; shrinkage set by real heat is usually permanent. A shrunk kurti still works belted or layered over a straight-cut trouser.
