Which Kurta Shape Suits Your Body Type? Start With the Garment, Not Your Body
A-Line, Straight or Anarkali — which kurta shape suits your body type, decided from the Shape, Length, Neck and Slit recorded on each Siaraa piece.

No kurta shape suits every body, and none of them is a fix for one. The useful question is which recorded silhouette matches your proportions: A-Line adds width from below the bust down, Straight adds none and falls in one line, and an Anarkali adds a lot of it from a seam above the waist.
Why this guide is organised by garment, not by body
Most "kurta for your body type" advice sorts you into a fruit and then tells you what to hide. This one runs the other way round. Siaraa records four attributes on every kurta — Shape, Length, Neck and Slit — and those four decide how the garment behaves before you are anywhere near it. Read the attribute, picture the outline, decide whether you want that outline.
Be honest about what this is: preference, not physics. No cut is universally flattering and no measurement disqualifies you from a silhouette. What follows is which shape tends to do what.
The three kurta silhouettes and what each one actually does
Siaraa records exactly three Shape values across kurtas, kurtis and kurta sets.
| Recorded Shape | Where width is added | What it does to your outline | Who tends to reach for it | Where it appears |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A-Line | Gradually, from below the bust to a wider hem | Skims past the hip instead of sitting on it; no waist seam, no gathers | Hip is the widest measurement, or you want the kurta off the waist | 4 kurtas, 6 kurta sets |
| Straight | Nowhere — the hem is roughly hip-width | One unbroken vertical column, shoulder to hem | Bust and hip within an inch or two; you want a skim, not a flare | 4 kurtas, 5 kurta sets, every kurti |
| Anarkali | At one seam above the natural waist, gathered below | Marks a waist high on the torso; everything under it becomes a swinging skirt | A narrow waist you want visible, plus torso length for the seam | Exactly 2, both complete sets |
Two things there are worth pausing on. Every kurti Siaraa stocks is recorded Straight — there is no A-line kurti, so if you want flare in a shorter piece you are shopping kurtas or kurta sets, not kurtis. And Anarkali means two specific products, not a range. The deeper structural comparison — where each flare originates, why an Anarkali reads festive in a plain print — is in A-line vs Anarkali vs straight kurta.
Length is the height decision, and it is nearly all Calf
Height changes how a kurta reads more than build does, and it is the attribute most people ignore. Siaraa records Length on kurtas and kurta sets:
- Calf Length — the default. Seven of the eight kurtas and twelve of the thirteen kurta sets are recorded Calf Length.
- Knee Length — exactly two garments: the Yellow Floral Embroidered Kurta and the Hot Pink Mirror Charm Co-Ord Set.
- Midi — one garment, and it is a dress rather than a kurta: the White & Pink Floral Print Tiered A-Line Midi Dress.
- Not recorded — kurtis carry no Length value; treat a kurti as shorter than a kurta and check the photographs.
If you are shorter than about 5'3", what matters is not the length itself but how many horizontal breaks the outfit creates. A Calf Length straight kurta over a narrow bottom gives one line from shoulder to ankle; a Knee Length kurta over wide palazzos gives three segments — top, exposed trouser, hem — and reads shorter. That Knee Length yellow kurta at ₹899 works better over a churidar than over a palazzo.
At 5'8" and above the trade reverses: Calf Length holds its proportion, Knee Length starts to read as a long top, and an Anarkali finally has the room its gathered skirt was built for.
Neck and slit are the smaller levers
Neckline changes the direction of the line. V-Neck and Sweetheart Neck extend it downward, which is what a Straight shape most often needs, since the garment supplies no vertical interest itself. Boat Neck and Square Neck extend it sideways across the collarbone. Halter Neck removes the shoulder line entirely. None is better; they point differently.
Side Slits change how a Straight kurta moves. Recorded on all eight kurtas and six of the seven kurtis, a slit lets a straight hem break instead of swinging as one block — closer to how an A-Line behaves at the hem, without the extra width through the hip. Only four kurta sets record slits; the rest are styled with their own bottom already.

Of those sets, the Red Cotton, Purple Printed, Peach Lotus and both Anarkali sets ship with a dupatta; the Sky Lemon halter set does not — style it with a dupatta you already own. Fabric is recorded per half on sets and the halves can differ: the Evara set is a Pure Cotton kurta over Viscose Rayon palazzos.
If the choice is between a kurti and a shorter top rather than between silhouettes, kurti vs tunic settles it — one of Siaraa's kurtis is catalogued as an everyday tunic top.
Sizes, and what this article deliberately does not tell you
Siaraa is an Indian online women's fashion brand — a trademark of Bright & Bloom Private Limited — selling its own catalogue of ethnic and everyday wear: cotton kurtas, kurtis, tunic tops, dresses, Anarkalis and co-ord sets. Free shipping across India, 5-day returns, prices in INR.
The sizing position, plainly:
- Kurta sets, co-ord sets and dresses are S to XXL. No XS, nothing above XXL.
- Some kurtas, kurtis and tops also carry XS — four of the eight kurtas and six of the seven kurtis. It is per product, not per category.
This article publishes no body measurements, and be wary of any kurta guide that quotes them without naming the garment. Every product page carries a Size Chart link beside the size selector, in inches or centimetres, for that specific piece. Read it there, order your usual size, and use the 5-day returns window if the fit is wrong.
Where this advice stops
Attributes tell you the outline. They do not tell you how a print sits across your shoulders or what you feel like wearing. A recorded Shape narrows 53 products to a handful worth trying — that is all it is for. Browse the women's collection and let your own eye finish.
FAQ
Which kurta shape suits my body type?
The working rule: A-Line adds width from below the bust downward, Straight adds none, and Anarkali adds a great deal from a seam above the waist. If your hip is your widest measurement, an A-Line lets fabric pass it rather than fit it. If your bust and hip are close, Straight works with the line you already have.
What kurta length should I wear if I am short?
Length matters less than the number of horizontal breaks in the outfit. A calf length kurta over a churidar or cigarette pant gives one unbroken vertical line; a knee length kurta over wide palazzos creates three visible segments and tends to read shorter. Siaraa records Length on every kurta and kurta set, so check it before ordering.
Which kurta shape works if I don't want it fitted through the waist?
An A-Line, in most cases. The widening begins below the bust and continues to the hem, so there is no point at which the garment is pulled in at the waist. A Straight kurta also never fits the waist, but it skims rather than flares. An Anarkali does the opposite — it deliberately marks a waist at its seam.
Do side slits change how a kurta looks?
Yes, mostly in movement. A side slit lets a straight hem break and part as you walk instead of swinging as a single block, which reads closer to an A-line at the hem without adding width through the hip. Siaraa records Side Slits on all eight of its kurtas and on six of its seven kurtis.
Which neckline should I choose for a kurta?
Necklines point the eye in a direction rather than flatter or fail. V-Neck and Sweetheart Neck extend the line downward, which pairs well with a Straight shape that has no vertical interest of its own. Boat Neck and Square Neck extend it sideways across the collarbone; a Halter Neck removes the shoulder line entirely.
What sizes do Siaraa kurtas come in?
Kurta sets, co-ord sets and dresses are stocked S to XXL. Some individual kurtas, kurtis and tops also carry XS — four of the eight kurtas and six of the seven kurtis do. Nothing is stocked above XXL, and the sizes offered are listed on each product page along with its Size Chart. The published garment measurements for every chart are collected in the size guide, which also explains why two pieces in the same letter size can sit differently.
